Many of us perform excellent genealogical research (or hire professionals to comb the archives) and put a lot of effort in constructing our own family trees. However, all such trees, however sophisticated, are growing in isolation.

One of the main aims of the WikiTree Project is to provide a central place on the Internet for kin information about all people we know ever lived, automatically construct bloodline trees, and watch the gradual emergence of global family forest of humanity. It might seem a huge undertaking, but in fact it is not. There is very little information that needs to be entered about any person - just name, names of his/her children, plus birth and death data; everything else can be inferred!

WikiTree uses open-source software MediaWiki - the same that is used by Wikipedia and other WikiMedia Foundation projects. That means we do not have to learn new syntax or editing tools. Never edited a MediaWiki website? Take a tutorial at Wikipedia.

WikiTree has been initiated by Tomáš J. Fülöpp (aka Vacilando) on 26 April 2005 as a free and collaborative project that is edited but also steered by users themselves. Use of WikiTree is - and will always be - provided at no charge. For more information about the project please follow this link.

Grow the Tree

First check whether the name you have in mind is present already in WikiTree. It can be your name, or name of whoever else you know enough about: a family member, friend or celebrity, whether alive or dead. Try to find it - use the search box on the left, or browse surname initial letter or one of the hierarchical categories above.

If there is no profile of the person you are thinking about, you are most welcome to add it - just follow the two easy steps to create a new personal profile!

If you wish to import large amounts of entries, from other database (GEDCOM or any other format), from text, or even from printed material, please contact Vacilando.

Coding and donations

Experienced PHP / MySQL / MediaWiki programmers are most welcome to submit their comments, patches and new versions of the WikiTree extensions. At Wikitree Extensions you can find up-to-date, automatically retrieved, code of all of them. After you develop - and test - your code, please submit it to Vacilando, who can upload them to the server.

The WikiTree project lives and grows thanks to the immense enthousiasm of its contributors. The only considerable financial cost is the rent of a dedicated server. In the past months, due to a steep increase of traffic, WikiTree.org had to go from one hosting company to another, each time a step higher not only in terms of hardware, but also in terms of the hosting costs. It has now come to the point where Vacilando hardly manages to pay the fees and he really could use your help. WikiTree.org currently needs about 300 USD per month to rent a sufficiently robust dedicated rack server (with proper bandwidth, backup plans, etc). That may seem little on one hand, yet it certainly is a lot to be covered just by one person with normal salary. However, for the whole WikiTree community, for the massive tens of thousands people who have contributed to Wikitree.org and gave it so much praise, this must be possible.... I am sure we can raise this from voluntary donations. If you agree and want to send some spare change - please click here!

Last but definitely not least, should you have any innovative funding / management ideas and proposals, please don't hesitate to contact Vacilando.
